Calypso
All I wanted after a long day of training was to wash away the sweat and grime the hard day had left caked upon my skin, and then sink into my bed. Or Ashâs bed. After his parting words that morning, I knew that heâd be sure to make me feel good, but as it turned out, fate deemed otherwise for me.
I had just finished toweling off, drying up the water that lingered on my skin from the warm bath Iâd almost fallen asleep in. The door to the bath chamber opened and Izzy walked in. Relief filled me when I saw the bundle of cloth she carried in her arms. I hadnât even thought about finding a change of clothes before I stripped out of my fighting leathers, and dreaded putting them back onto my freshly washed skin. Izzyâs arrival meant I wouldn't have to, and a smiled curled my lips as she placed them onto a wooden bench. She settled into the spot beside them.
âTough day?â she asked, but her knowing look told me she already knew the answer. I could feel how sore my jaw was and didnât doubt a bruise had bloomed from the hit Iâd taken to it. Moose had felt bad when my guard slipped and his hit landed during practice, but while heâd been struggling to spew apologies, Iâd seized his distraction and knocked him off his feet. Before he could even realize what had happened, I was hunched at his side with a wooden training dagger pressed against his throat.
Remembering his look of surprise turned grudging respect, I reached up and touched the skin around the wound and winced. I tried to hide it, but Izzyâs eyes narrowed and I gave up pretending it didnât hurt as bad as it looked as I sank down beside her and rested my head on her shoulder, the scratchy towel I wore wrapped tightly around my chest.
âNot so much tough, as long. Iâm glad theyâre taking my request to train seriously, but I got winded a lot sooner than I thought I would. Maybe Iâm in worse shape than I thought?â
Izzy shot me a disbelieving look, having to pull away while she did, but after a sigh, she moved close enough that I could rest my head on her again. I could feel the tension she carried in her tightly bunched muscles as she softly shook her head.
âYouâre not out of shape, Calypso. The Divine worked us too hard to be that, but you are still healing. I know you say you feel fine, and sure, your body looks healed, but we donât know how badly that magic hit you. Youâre pushing too far, too soon. And donât pretend like you donât plan to be on the run to disrupt the stones delivery. We both know you wonât sit it out.â
My shoulders stiffened as I considered disputing her words, but this was Izzy. She would hear the lie easily, so I dropped my hands to play with the frayed edges of the grey towel that clung to my body.
